Who pays the doctor after a crash if I don't have health insurance?

You got hit, everything hurts, and you've got no health insurance. Here's where the money for your doctors may come from and why you shouldn't wait.

The short versionIn many cases there are ways to get treated after a crash even without health insurance, but which ones apply depends on your case. Get medical care and talk to a lawyer before you sign or pay anything.

It hurts, but you're scared of the bill

You got hit. Your neck hurts, your back hurts, your head is pounding. But you don't have health insurance, and the first thing on your mind is: "Who's going to pay for this?"

Real talk, this happens to a lot of la raza here in Southern California. And because they're scared of the bill, a lot of people skip the doctor. They tough it out, pop a pill, and go back to work like nothing happened.

That can cost you big. Your health comes first. And in many cases, not seeing a doctor also hands the insurance company an excuse to say you "weren't really that hurt."

Where can the money come from?

There's no one-size-fits-all answer. It depends on how the crash happened, who was at fault, and which insurance policies are involved. Generally, these are some of the things that get looked at.

The other driver's insurance may end up covering your medical costs as part of your claim. But heads up: they almost never pay right away. A lot of the time, that gets sorted out at the end of the case.

Your own car insurance policy may have medical payments coverage. Plenty of people have it and don't even know. It's worth having someone check it with you.

In many cases, there are doctors and clinics willing to treat you and wait to get paid until your case is resolved. There are details to that, so it's smart to have a lawyer look over that paperwork before you sign.

And if the crash happened while you were on the clock, things may be different, because workers' comp could come into play.

Every case is different — hit us up and we'll tell you what options may be on the table for you.

Watch what you sign

After a crash, paperwork shows up from everywhere: the hospital, the ambulance company, the other driver's insurance. Some of it asks for permission to see your whole medical history. Some of it offers "payment plans" or agreements.

Don't ignore the bills, but don't pay, sign, or promise anything without asking first. What you sign today can affect your case tomorrow. Before you put your name on anything, talk it over with a lawyer.

What you can do starting today

These steps are practical and help you take care of yourself, insurance or not:

  1. See a doctor as soon as you can, even if you feel "kinda okay." If it's an emergency, go to the ER.
  2. Tell the doctor it was from a crash and mention everything that hurts, even if it seems small.
  3. Keep every piece of paper: bills, prescriptions, receipts, and doctor's notes.
  4. Write down in a notebook how you feel each day and how many days of work you missed.
  5. Take photos of your bruises, cuts, and injuries.
  6. Follow your treatment and don't quit halfway.
  7. Don't sign anything from the insurance company or a collector until a lawyer looks at it.

Don't back down because of the bill

Not having health insurance doesn't mean you have to go without care. But you don't have to guess, either. The sooner you understand your options, the better you can take care of yourself and your family.
