Stay sharp on the deadlines: 2 years for a crash, 30 days to tell your boss

If you miss the deadline, you can lose your right to get paid. These are the deadlines you need to know.

The short versionIn California you generally have 2 years to sue over a crash or injury, only 6 months if the government is at fault, and 30 days to tell your boss you got hurt at work.

Crashes and personal injury: 2 years

Generally, you have 2 years from the day of the accident to file a personal injury lawsuit. If you miss it, a judge can throw out your case even if you're completely right.

If it's against the government: 6 months

If you were hit by a city bus or a county vehicle, or fell on a broken public sidewalk, the deadline is much shorter. You usually have to file a written claim within 6 months.

Work injuries: 30 days to report

You have to tell your employer within 30 days that you got hurt. Do it in writing and keep a copy. There are other deadlines to open the formal case, usually one year.

What if the injury built up over time?

With injuries that come on slowly, like carpal tunnel or a back injury from lifting, the clock may start when you learned the injury came from work. Every case is different.
